The upgrade and renovation of the Yuehai Railway Ferry is about to begin

Recently, a reporter from Jiandao Network learned from the Xuwen County Government website that the "Pre approval Announcement of the Environmental Impact Report Form for the Guangdong Hainan Railway North and South Port (North Port) Facility Renovation Project" has been released. The project is expected to commence construction in 2024, with a planned construction period of 1 year.
The upgrade and renovation project of the Yuehai Railway Ferry is positioned as a transitional process of the Zhanhai High Speed Railway and a guarantee project for the Yuehai Railway Ferry. The construction of this project is necessary to support the construction of a free trade pilot zone and a free trade port with Chinese characteristics in Hainan; It is necessary to provide support for the construction of an "international tourism island"; It is necessary to improve the transportation capacity of the Yuehai Railway Ferry and enhance the competitiveness of the Yuehai Railway Ferry market.
The Yuehai Railway is the first cross sea railway in China, which connects Hainan Island and the mainland railway network through a "two line, one ferry" transportation model and uses railway ferries to integrate it into the national railway network.
The Yuehai Railway Ferry mainly consists of "two ports and four ships", namely the South and North ports, and the four passenger ro/ro ships "Yuehai Railway 1, 2, 3, and 4". Mainly responsible for the transportation of passengers, cars, and freight trains in the Qiongzhou Strait, with a sea navigation distance of 12.5 nautical miles.

Currently, the daily operating capacity is 28 voyages. With the continuous growth of passenger and freight traffic in the Qiongzhou Strait, the passenger and freight transportation capacity of the Guangdong Hainan Railway ferry is approaching saturation. As time goes by, due to the limitations of port shipping facilities and equipment, the existing Yuehai Railway Ferry has small transportation capacity, long time consumption, and relatively low satisfaction with travel experience.
Zhanhai High Speed Rail Project
The Zhanhai high-speed railway consists of two major projects: the main high-speed railway line and the ferry. The main high-speed railway line is an onshore part, namely the Zhanjiang to Xuwen section, and the ferry is a ferry crossing the Qiongzhou Strait and related projects. The length of the newly built main line on land is about 126km, with a target speed of 350km/h for the newly built passenger dedicated line, and three new stations. A new north-south ferry station will be built in the ferry section, approximately 23km from the Qiongzhou Strait, with supporting railway station transfer facilities such as arrival and departure yards and storage tracks. New ferry vessels will be built, and port engineering facilities such as docks, berths, breakwaters, and dredging will be built.
This project mainly relies on the Hai'an South Station arrival-departure yard and Beigang Ferry yard to renovate the main line and existing arrival-departure yard, and to build a new Beigang Station on the basis of the existing Beigang Ferry yard.
Beigang, an additional arrival and departure yard (Beigang Station) for regular speed passenger trains will be added between the east side of the arrival and departure yard at Hai'an South Station and the Beigang berth, with 2 arrival and departure and storage tracks and a 500m island platform × 9m × 1.25m. Convert the four existing arrival-departure tracks on the east side of the existing arrival-departure yard into passenger main tracks, two passenger service tracks, and one passenger storage track. Additionally, build four freight car arrival-departure tracks on the west side, and renovate the throat area of the yard accordingly.
The Beigang Depot maintains the existing internal combustion traction unchanged. On the north side of the ferry terminal, a closed passenger transfer and distribution hall with an area of 1600 square meters and a corridor between platforms will be set up, and the platform will be equipped with electric shuttle buses. The distribution hall and corridors are equipped with ventilation and air conditioning systems, and customer service facilities such as gates, broadcasts, and videos are set up according to the needs of passenger transportation organizations. According to the actual situation of handling passenger trains, set up facilities for crew rest.
In Nangang, a passenger train arrival and departure yard will be added between the Haikou Station arrival and departure yard and the Nangang berth, with 2 arrival and departure tracks and a 230m island platform × 9m × At 1.25m, Haikou Station will maintain its existing scale and the northern throat area will undergo corresponding renovation. Newly added arrival and departure tracks and related routes are set according to electrification requirements. Set up a closed passenger transfer and distribution hall of 1600 square meters and platform corridors on the south side of the ferry terminal, and add relevant gates and other facilities to meet the entry and exit conditions for a small number of non vehicle and ship transfer passengers.
The distribution hall and corridors are equipped with ventilation and air conditioning systems, and customer service facilities such as gates, broadcasts, and videos are set up according to the needs of passenger transportation organizations.
